Carlos Rossa, PhD, P.Eng

Dr. Rossa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University. He received his BEng and MSc degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Ecole Nationale d'Ingénieurs de Metz, Metz, France, both in 2010, and earned his PhD degree in mechatronics and robotics from the Sorbonne Université (UPMC), Paris, France, in 2014 under the auspices of the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA).

Sathiyamoorthy Selladurai, PhD - Postdoctoral Researcher

Dr. Selladurai received his BEng in Electronics and Communication in 2010, and MEng in Control and Instrumentation in 2012, both from Anna University, India. He earned his Ph.D. degree in ultrasound elastography from IIT Madras, India, in 2020. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow (2020-22) at the University of Montréal, Canada. He also worked as Project Scientist (2014-15) at NHHID, and as project engineer (2012-14) at TIFAC CORE in Machine Vision. His research interests include biomedical ultrasound, quantitative elastography, calibration of instruments, machine vision, and automation.

Hossein Asilian, MASc - PhD Student

Hossein received his BEng degree from Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan, Iran in 2013, and his MASc degree from Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran in 2016 both in Electrical Engineering. After his graduation he worked on numerical analysis of electromagnetic systems as a research assistant in the Applied Electromagnetics Laboratory for two years. He is now pursuing his PhD degree at Carleton in the area of biomedical device instrumentation for robotic surgery.

Hoorieh Mazdarani, MASc - PhD Student

Hoorieh received her BSc degree in Electrical Engineering-Electronics from Razi University, Kermanshah, Iran, in 2008 and her MSc degree in Electrical Engineering-Control from Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2011. After graduation, she established her start-up and collaborated on several industrial projects. She is now pursuing her PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a focus on robotic surgery at Carleton University.

Afshin Alaghehband, MASc - PhD Student

Afshin holds a BEng degree in Computer Engineering - Hardware, which he earned in 2018, and an MASc degree in Computer Engineering - Computer Systems Architecture, obtained in 2023, both from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FMU), Iran. Throughout his time at FUM, he actively engaged in numerous research and industrial projects focused on robotics. In the bioMechatronics lab, he is researching ultrasound-guided robotic surgery.

Samuel Lovett, B.Eng - Master's Student

Samuel graduated from Ontario Tech University in 2022 with a BEng in Mechatronics Engineering. He won second place at the capstone design competition for the design and development of a human-like collaborative robotic arm. Before this, he worked as a research assistant in the bioMechatronics lab on the smart firefighting helmet project. The project has gone on to become a start-up (Hibou Systems) and the research of his Master of Applied Science at Carleton University. He is the recipient of the HM Queen Elizabeth II Scholarhip in Science and Technology at Carleton for 2022-23

Kian Zalzalah, B.Eng - Master's Student

Kian graduated from Carleton University in 2024 with a BEng in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. He worked in Digital Hardware at Ericsson (2021-22) where he gained experience in electronics as a co-op student and has maintained high academic standard throughout his undergraduate studies. He joined the bioMechatronics lab as a full time MASc student in the summer of 2024 and is currently working on ultrasound image simulation for robot aided surgery training. He intends to achieve his goal of forwarding the link between healthcare and engineering.

Kade Macwilliams, B.Eng - Master's Student

Kade recently completed a Bachelors in biomedical engineering at Carleton University. After completing his capstone design projec in the bioMechatronics lab, he joined the lab in the spring of 2024 to begin a Masters in biomedical engineering. His research includes developing new technologies to assist surgeons in training for paediatric laparoscopic procedures. He is excited to be able to apply engineering principles to the area of medical technology and to continue to learn about new areas of engineering. He is the receipient of the 2024-2025 Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology.

Alec Bales-D'Cruze, B.Eng - Master's student

Alec just completed his undergraduate in Engineering Physics at Carleton University and is eager to continue his education. During his undergraduate degree he held two research positions within the Department of Electronics working with a team of biologist at the University of Ottawa to develop an experimental test setup studying the effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic and acoustic waves. Alec is excited to continue working in research while focusing on instrumentation and signal processing for acoustoelectric characterization.

Alec Cotton - Research and Teaching Assistant

Alec is in his third year of an undergraduate degree in computer systems engineering at Carleton University. Taking interest in control system processes with an application in biomedical technology, Alec is researching haptic sensors for robotic surgery and surgical training in virtual reality. He is the recipient of the 2023 Carleton University Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and the 2024 NSERC USRA.

Jacob Horne - Co-op Student

Jacob is a Fourth-year mechanical engineering student at Carleton University. He joined the biomechatronic lab in summer 2024 where he is working on the design of hybrid force feedback actuators. Jacob is interested in pushing the limits of 3D printing and virtual reality. He is the recipient of the 2023 W.R. Davis Engineering Scholarship.

Ben Keeshan, PhD - Postdoctoral Researcher

Dr. Keeshan received his BSc in physics in 2015 and his PhD in particle physics in 2021 both from Carleton University. His PhD research involved extended Higgs sectors. He is now researching acoustoelectric tomography.

Conor Mcdermott, B.Eng - Master's Student

Conor graduated from Ontario Tech University in 2020 with a BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering, specialised in Mechatronics. Through his undergrad, he worked as a research assistant and in injection molding. His fourth year capstone project was the design and development of a telemedical rehabilitation device using magnetorheological technology. The research for his master's is multimodal tissue characterization and identification.

Huda Sheikh - Undergraduate Student (co-op)

Huda is a fourth year biomedical and electrical engineering student at Carleton University. Her interests in biomedical engineering include medical devices, biomedical instrumentation, clinical tools used to improve patient care, and machine learning models in healthcare. Elizabeth John - Undergraduate Student (I-CUREUS)

Elizabeth is currently in her fourth year of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering at Carleton University. She is a Trinidadian-American and lived abroad for most of her life before moving to Canada in 2017. What made her interested in Biomedical Engineering was the idea of enhancing the medical field through innovative research and technology. At Carleton, she received the 2020 President Scholarship, the 2021 E.W.R. Steacie Scholarship, and is on the 2021 Deans' Honour List. She is researching dielectric tissue spectroscopy in the bioMechatronics lab.

Sridhanussh Srinivasan, BEng - MEng Student

Sridhanussh graduated from Anna University in 2020 with a B.Eng. Degree in Biomedical engineering. For his capstone project, he worked on a Classification system for PPG signals using Support vector machine and Artificial neural networks. Ben DeBoer, B.Eng - Master's Student

Ben graduated from Ontario Tech University in 2020 with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering, with a specialization in Mechatronics. For his capstone project, he worked on a control system for an automated ankle-foot orthosis. The goal of this project is to aid patients who suffer from foot drop. In the bioMechatronics lab, Ben will be completing his Masters of Applied Science with research focused on adaptive exoskeletons.

Olivia Wilz, B.Eng - Master's Student

Olivia earned her BEng in Mechanical Engineering specializing in Mechatronics in 2019 from the Ontario Tech University. For her capstone Olivia worked on developing a speed/power boost system for an internal combustion engine. She is continuing her studies at Ontario Tech in the form of a Master’s Degree in Applied Science, Mechanical Engineering. For the Master’s Degree, she is doing research focused on autonomous robotic nephrolithotomy.

Rick Tan, B.Eng - Master's Student

Rick graduated in 2019 from Ontario Tech University with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Mechatronics. For his capstone, Rick developed a Part Scanner Machine for General Motors (GM) that can obtain an inventory item’s information and upload it to a custom database. Also during his undergrad, Rick conducted research in the ACE Wind Tunnel as well as designed an UAV. He is currently pursuing his MSc on robot-aided cancer imaging.

Maciej Lacki, B.Eng - Master's Student

Maciej graduated from Ontario Tech Universtiy in 2018 with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree. During his undergraduate years, Maciej worked for Marion Surgical, where he assisted in the development of a virtual surgeon training simulator. He completed his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering in the lab between Sep 2018 and Aug 2020 and worked on novel haptic devices for robotic surgery. He is the recipient of the 2021 Ontario Tech Outstanding Thesis award.
